There will always be moments in which you did — or didn’t– do something that ended up shaping your career or brand. These are called career moments… And if you’re aware of them, you have the power to decide how much you give (and get) out of each experience.

Some moments that define your career include:

· Interviewing for your dream role.
Learning how to effectively communicate about your work experiences — and talents.

· Interviewing a prospective employee.
Learning to identify talent that will take your work to the next level.

· Leaving a job.
Learning to leave on a positive note.

· Starting a new job.
Learning to get comfortable with the unknown.

· Negotiating salary.
Learning to stand in your worth.

· Receiving a promotion.
Learning to become a leader.

· Networking with an influential person.
Learning how to grow relationships.

· Delivering an important speech.
Learning to harness your words as a tool to make an impact.

· Asking for a raise.
Learning to communicate the value you’re bringing to the table.

· Learning when to say ‘yes’ and ‘no.’
It’s all about being in integrity with yourself.

· Handling criticism.
Learning to see criticism as feedback that makes you a stronger leader.

· Having an important conversation with someone crucial to your career (this could include your manager, leader, peer, employee, or mentor).
Your success is directly tied to your willingness to have uncomfortable conversations.

· Completing a big project.
Feeling the gratification of having give your all to something.

· Creating or building something new in your career.
Using your career as a vehicle for self- expression.

· Getting new management.
Learning how to adapt to change.

· Getting your first management role — and dealing with hiring and firing.
Learning how to do what’s best for your team, even if it means letting someone go.

· Missing — or barely making — a deadline.
Learning how to manage your time and your boss’ expectations.

· Dealing with performance reviews — whether they’re positive or negative.
Learning how to use feedback.

· Handling mergers and acquisitions.
Learning how to continue adding value, despite transitions.

· Messing up in general… It happens to the best of us!
Learning how to take responsibility.

Seize your career moment, capture it, and share it!

All of these moments can be intimidating, especially if they’re new experiences. However, these moments are key to forging your future path! Know that you’re not alone.

Career Companion is collecting #CareerMoment stories so you can celebrate and learn from each other’s experiences. Here’s how it works:

  2. Snap a square black & white photo of yourself holding the printed and signed page.
  3. Share the photo and your career moment story on your social media channels using the #CareerMoment hashtag in the post.
